Attorneys Joe Cunningham and Aaron Scheer of Joe Cunningham Law

Personal injury law, done the way it should be done.

Joe Cunningham Law is a personal injury firm in Charleston, South Carolina. We represent people who have been hurt by someone else’s negligence.

We keep the caseload selective on purpose. Your case deserves real attention: real investigation rather than a form letter to the adjuster, real preparation rather than a rush to settle at the first offer. Every client works with an attorney who knows the facts of their case, not a case manager who summarizes them.

We work on contingency. The consultation is free, we front the costs of building your case, and we are paid only if we recover for you. If we do not, you owe us nothing.

And we try cases. Insurance companies keep track of which firms file and which firms fold. Our reputation to push cases to trial yields better results for our clients.

Who you’ll be working with.

Joe Cunningham

Founder & Trial Attorney

Joe Cunningham founded the firm to practice personal injury law the way he believes it should be practiced: a smaller caseload, real preparation, and a lawyer who actually knows your case.

He grew up in Kuttawa, Kentucky, a town of around 500, where his father practiced law and later served as a justice on the Kentucky Supreme Court. Joe took a different route into the profession. He earned a degree in Ocean Engineering from Florida Atlantic University and began his career at a marine and environmental consulting firm in Naples, Florida, designing marinas and managing waterfront development. He went on to earn his law degree and built his practice in Charleston.

In 2018, Joe was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for South Carolina’s First Congressional District, the first Democrat to hold the seat in more than forty years. He served from 2019 to 2021, then returned to practicing law full-time.

Joe has handled civil litigation from both sides, plaintiff and defense. That experience shapes how he prepares a case and how he reads an insurer’s next move. He lives in Charleston with his wife, Ashley, their sons, Boone and Almon, and their rescue dogs, Teddy and Lincoln.
